Three companies shortlisted for West Midlands franchise
The DfT has shortlisted three train operating companies for the next West Midlands passenger rail franchise. The contract is expected to be awarded in June 2017 with the new operator taking over in October 2017.
The three bidders are:
- London & West Midlands Railways Ltd (a Govia subsidiary company; Govia is also the incumbent operator and operates as a 65:35 Go-Ahead /Keolis joint venture trading as London Midland);
- West Midlands Trains Ltd (Dutch state-owned Abellio with East Japan Railway and Mitsui as minority partners); and,
- MTR Corporation (West Midlands) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTR Corporation (UK) Ltd. (MTR is Hong Kong-based).
Govia has held the franchise since November 2007; the existing franchise expires this month and has been extended by direct award to the start of the new one.
