Poverty of Northern Powerhouse exposed

Public sector spending per head in the Northern Powerhouse area is less than a quarter of that in London, according to the latest Treasury figures.

The figures came in a written response from Andrew Jones, parliamentary under-secretary at the DfT.

The most recent statistics  from the HM Treasury Country & Regional Analysis (CRA)  for 2014/15 show the per capita spend in London was £353 as against £113 for England and £93 for the North West.

But the Northern Powerhouse area – comprising the North West, the North East and the Yorkshire & the Humber regions – it was a meagre £88 ( or around a quarter of the London spend).

The Northern Powerhouse is a flagship government project aimed at redressing regional economic imbalance and inequality.
