Porterbrook orders more Class 387s
Rolling stock leasing company Porterbrook has ordered 20 four car Class 387 ‘Electrostar’ emu (electric multiple unit) sets from train manufacturer Bombardier for an undisclosed sum. They will be built at Derby and are scheduled for 2016-17 delivery.
This is a ‘spec’ order as no train operating company has yet committed to leasing any units, though Porterbrook says it has received expressions of interest from TfL’s Rail for London, as well as from established operators and prospective franchise bidders. Porterbrook strategy appears to be banking on anticipating orders based on fulfilling future traffic growth projections.
This order will take the number of company-owned Class 387 units to 84 (336 vehicles): 29 units are currently deployed on the Thameslink route; 27 sets are under construction for Gatwick Express; and GWR will take another eight in 2017.
