MTR wins TfL Crossrail contract

Hong Kong-based MTR Corporation has beaten off challenges from Arriva, Keolis/Go Ahead and the National Express Group to win TfL’s£1.4bn eight year contract to run Crossrail.

The new contract takes effect on 31 March 2015 when MTR will take over Abellio Greater Anglia’s  Liverpool Street to Shenfield service. It will use existing stock until new trains become available in 2017.

Crossrail services are being phased in through different stages and should be fully operational by December 2019: The 72 mile route serves 60 stations and will connect Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east with Reading and Heathrow in the west.

MTR will also assume responsibility for the Heathrow Connect service from May 2018.

The concession is similar to the one TfL granted to run London Overground (which is operated by an MTR/Arriva joint venture), and it includes an option to extend to ten years.
