GNER open access application for ECML

Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) has submitted plans to the ORR (Office of Rail Regulation) to provide an hourly open access high speed service on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) between London, Newcastle and Edinburgh from December 2016.

GNER, a subsidiary of Alliance Rail Holdings (part of Arriva UK Trains), is planning to use an updated version of the tilting ‘Pendolino’ train to slash journey times between the two capital cities by nearly 40 minutes, and make  it competitive with air transport.

The trains will be completely privately funded, and the promoters say infrastructure improvements on the ECML have increased capacity on the route.
