Electrify to Holyhead
Welsh Assembly transport minister Edwina Hart has called on the Westminster government to electrify the North Wales mainline by 2024.
Hart has submitted an online business plan to the transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin. It was drawn up in conjunction with the North West Economic Ambition Board, the Mersey-Dee Alliance and the Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Hart says the region’s potential for economic growth is being held back by inadequate rail infrastructure.
The North Wales mainline connects Holyhead and Llandudno with Warrington and Crewe on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). Network Rail’s Welsh route study has already listed the route as a priority project for completion under CP6, the next control period (2019-24).
