Balfour Beatty pulls out of Blackpool electrification
Following the surprise announcement that contractor Balfour Beatty is to pull out of the Preston to Blackpool North electrification project, Network Rail is unable to say at this stage whether this move will add to the cost of the scheme or delay its completion.
Unlike the Midland Main Line or the Trans Pennine electrifications, this is one scheme that has not been ‘officially’ put on hold pending further review. Rumours persist that the scheme was behind schedule and over budget.
A Network Rail spokesman told LTT: “We have carried out a review to ensure we have the most efficient deployment of resources to deliver the next phases of this key improvement. By mutual agreement Balfour Beatty will be leaving the partnership delivery of North West Electrification. This is the appropriate time following the completion of phase two between Manchester, Liverpool and Wigan.
“We will be retaining Balfour Beatty’s design services, and a new contractor will be appointed shortly. A full transition plan is in place to ensure that this work continues.”
